Actually I didn't quite understand what I'm supposed to do for this homework. What I do know I need to choose three words from the mind map and explain how to relate them with the Mortar and Pestle. So, I chose Married, Music and Game as my keywords.

1st Keyword: Married
Explanation: Mortar can be symbolized as the groom because it is bigger and stronger and pestle as the bride.

2nd Keyword: Music
Explanation: Music can be produced by using Pestle to hit the Mortar.

3rd Keyword: Game
Explanation: A game can be made by using Mortar and Pestle. First, put the Mortar at the ground. Then from a distance, throw the Pestle and try to get as nearer as you can to the Mortar. Whoever can get the nearest distance with the Mortar win the game.

Lecture Summary:

In week 04, I have learned about "Method of Creative Thinking" which are about two mind mapping techniques (Logical and Associated Mind Map) and stereotype. If last two weeks lecture was focusing on Logical Mind Map, in this week 06, the lecture is focusing on Associated Mind Map which is presented by Mr Radzi Bedu.

Associated Mind Map's technique is different than Logical Mind Map. In Logical Mind Map, every words and images are link to the main central subject but in Associated Mind Map, every words and images is away from the main central subject. In other words, Associated Mind Map using the main central subject to generate new random words and show the links between words that seemingly have no connection.

In conclusion, Associated Mind Map is suitable to generate ideas which is different than Logical Mind Map that used for gathering information.

Personal Reflection:

In my own opinion, "Method of creative Thinking" is a really interesting topic to be learned. Before having this lecture, I totally no idea about Associated Mind Map and only knew about Logical Mind Map. I think, to be a creative person, we need to learn both of these techniques to improve our skills in generating ideas and gathering informations.

Exercise : Analogy

Chilli Vs Love
You are red, You are hot,
Your every bites makes me explode like a fireworks,
You brings terror to most but brings me ecstasy.

Time Vs Life
Every second, every minute,
slip through silently,
Every day, every week,
what have we done meaningful so far?

Ice cream Vs Pain
Every time I have you, I feel so sweat,
You are so temptation, you are so attractive,
Every time I have you too much,
You makes my teeth and gums in pain.

Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition is a very unsafe criterion of continuity. — Hare.”

Juxtaposition. Such a strange word to be spelled. Well, before knowing more about that, let me find the meaning in dictionary; “Juxta” means “Near” in Latin. And “Position “synonymous to the word “Place”, “Location”, “Situation”

According to [link], Juxtaposition means placing together side by side for comparison or contrast. It is the state of being together.

From Wiktionary, they elaborate more Juxtaposition in few aspects:

  1. A placing or being placed in nearness or contiguity, or side by side, often done in order to compare/contrast the two, to showsimilaritiesdifferences. An absence of linking elements in a group of words that are listed or together.

Example: mother father instead of mother and father

  1. (art, literature) Two or more contrasting sounds, registers, styles etc. placed together for stylistic effect.
  2. (logic) A logical fallacy on the part of the observer, where two items placed next to each other imply a correlation, when none is actually claimed.
  3. (mathematics) An absence of multiplication symbols.

Example: ab instead of a × b

Cited from: Wiktionary

Generally people consider Juxtaposition is synonymous to Contradiction, Paradox, Incongruent, etc. But more than that, Juxtaposition has a sense of nearness. Therefore, I conclude that Juxtaposition is contrasts that being placed together in close proximity, or side by side. They are being placed so, so we can see the differences and the similarities. Simpler word; Applying Contrast side by side.

Gerald Grow in “Teaching Shakespeare through Exercises on Acting and on the Basic Emotions” made an example of Juxtaposition from the movie “Romeo and Juliet”

  • Youth and old age;
  • Servants and nobles;
  • Love-sick Romeo and fiery Tybalt;
  • The noisy public feast and the private whispers of the lovers;
  • Romeo’s infatuation and Juliet’s wit;
  • The old nurse and young Juliet; and so on. Cited from: [link]

The benefit of having Juxtaposition:

  • Make a clear different of 2 objects, and learn from the object.
  • Obvious contrast makes us analyze things clearly.
  • Can have it as a revision, review, and adjustment point.
  • Make a correction from that comparison.

Sometimes it’s good to contrast what you like with something else. It makes you appreciate it even more. “–Darby Conley, Get Fuzzy, 2001

Lecture Summary:

From the lecture in week 07 by Mdm Nur, I have learned a new topic about Juxtaposition. Juxtaposition can be described as the arrangement of two or more ideas, characters, actions, settings, phrases or words side by side. In other words, Juxtaposition is about placing variables side by side to compare and contrast their similarities and differences. This technique is a popular approach in creative processes.

For example in this sentence, "It's raining, but I am not taking umbrella", we can say that in 1st clause: the speaker is aware of weather situation and will prepare for it; we also can say that in 2nd clause: the speaker is taking risk of getting wet. Both clauses refer to related situations yet imply a contradiction.

For conclusion, Juxtaposition is a relationship of comparing something similar, yet different.

Personal Reflection:

In my opinion, this topic is an interesting topic and an important topic to be learned by all FCM students if they want to be a creative person. This technique is allow us to generate new ideas by using synonymous with contrast, two objects or texts that oppose one another.

I think Mdm Nur done a good job in introducing this topic by giving good example in lecture class. Especially the example that using two different pictures with two different situations. \

Exercise:

For this homework, I will refer the "Jumper" movie as my example.

Good/Evil:
David, the main character in this movie is actually a good person even though he rob to live but because of his teleport ability as a "Jumper", an organization "The Paladins" who swore to kill jumpers marked him as an evil person.

Chaos/Calm:
Because of David ability, he live in a calm environment where he can do whatever he want, but after "The Paladins" discover about him, he begin to live in chaos and hunted by them.

Kind/Cruel:
David's mother seem to be a cruel person when she left David when he is still small, but because of her role as "The Paladins"s member, she have to leave him and protect her son's identity as a "Jumper". This proved she is cruel to be kind.

Amusing/Shocking:
Having an ability like David is amusing because it is fun to teleport anywhere you want, but it is also can be shocking when actually he can teleport and drop you in the middle of the ocean or put you in jail.

Random Word & Image Association.

- an idea generation method which allows students to systematically generate new ideas though fixed formula. The whole premise of Random Association is to use a Random Word to provoke a reaction from the brain.

"Chances come to everyone but not everyone see it because they not have the knowledge."
"Chances only come to the people who have knowledge."
"Without knowledge we wont find the chances"

We always have our motivation, just like a donkey have a carrot to make it move.
The carrot of us maybe is money,or anythings.
...but how we get away from the carrot?
When to use it:
- Use it to stimulate open and divergent thinking and seek creative new ideas.
- Use it to re-ignite creative thinking when you are running out of ideas.
- Use it to get people out of a rut when their thinking is still rather conventional.

How to use it:

1. Find a random word

- Find a random word that will be used as a stimulus for new ideas. You can do this in a number of ways, including:
  • Look around you. What can you see? Can you see any words? What about things? What else is happening?
  • Open a book at a random page. Run your finger around the page and stop at a random point. Look for a suitable word near your finger.
  • Ask the people you are with to give you a random word.
  • Select a word from a prepared list of evocative words (fire, child, brick, sausage, etc.)
Good random words are (a) evocative and (b) nothing to do with the problem being considered. Ambiguity also helps. Nouns are usually best, but verbs and adjectives can also be used effectively.

2. Find associations

- Think about other things about which the word reminds you. Follow associations to see where they go.
- Think openly: associations can be vague and tenuous (this is creativity, not an exam!).
- When working with a group of people, you can write these down on a flipchart as people call them out. It can be useful (but not necessary) to leave a space after each associate for use in stage 3.

3. Use the associations to create new ideas

- Now create new ideas by linking any of the associations with your problem. Again, the linkage can be as vague as you like: what you want is ideas!
- Write the ideas either next to their associations from step 2 or on a separate page.
- If other people give ideas that trigger further ideas from you, then you can go off down that route to see where it goes.
- As a variant, you can do stages 2 and 3 together, finding an association and an immediate idea from this.

Example :
How to make a person to stop smoking in 6 months time?

Random word : Traffic Light
What will you think of when you saw a traffic light?

- Color
- Price
- Thin
- Awareness

Association :

Colour : We can use colors to indicate dangers. The red colour indicate most danger follow by yellow colour and green colour. While the smokers see the colours he/she will think about the dangers he/she will face and slowly stop smoking.

Price : We can increase the price of amercement not the cigarette price so when they smoke in the non smoking area they will get the high price amerce.

Thin : Make the cigarette's material become thin so the smoker will become weariness to smoke.

Awareness: Create an awareness image on the cigarette skin and show that smoking will not make people become slim and yet it will make our lungs to become dark and also ugly .

Conclusion : So, people won't buy it if the colour of the cigarette's smoke is in colour and they won't be taking risk to do that .
